I stood and watched this character for a while whilst walking in Dartmoor near Two Bridges. If you have ever looked into a collection of rainwater in the garden and seen mosquito larvae flipping and twisting up and down, that is exactly how this little fellow moved. He would stop in front of me, curiosity personified, and then he was off!, across the field like a ball of legs at 100 miles per hour, and then he was back again!, stock still for another look at me. The two mares in the background were standing lookout, their heads resting on each other’s backs like sentinels. The mare to the right of the painting (I guessed) is the foal’s mother. I deliberately made these other characters insubstantial to focus the viewer on the foal. His coat is patterned with swirls and eddies (like the surface of Jupiter) and he has these huge brown lashes that almost totally cover his eyes. He will live on Dartmoor, essentially wild, for all of his life. He did have a farmer’s brand on his side, but I don’t paint things like that. Lord of the Moors.
