This painting is the most ambitious thing I have ever attempted. I knew from the outset that it would take me ages to do, and it did! I worked on it for about three months every day after work. The concentric circle and straight line pattern is one that my brother and I used to draw as soon as we were old enough to play with a compass without stabbing ourselves (or each other!). I used to like alternate colours of black and orange, which looked really cool (so do tigers!). This one is in a different league though. The colour in any given segment is always in direct contrast to the colours around it (except down the central rainbow). The shading on each side of the circle is formed from adding increasing quantities of black and white to the colour for that ring. The corner patterns (another one that my brother and I used to draw – does anyone remember those nail and string things?) are made from two contrasting colours mixed with each other in increasing quantities as you go towards the centre. This was an extremely satisfying painting to watch grow.
